Ampersand coworking space to be a mecca for solo employees

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Marquette Chamber of Commerce is looking for more people to sign up for its Ampersand coworking space in the Masonic Square.

Coworking is people working by themselves—like independent contractors and remote workers—but sharing the same space. Chamber Executive Director Jason Schneider says being able to work around other people produces a synergy that wouldn’t be present if they were working alone.

“It helps get some of those creative juices flowing,” he says. “It gets people out of their homes and the whole coffee shop shuffle, trying to find public space to work, and really creates an atmosphere of energy around the workplace.”

Schneider says 19 businesses have already signed up for Ampersand, but because many will use the space only once or twice a week, hundreds more can join. He says people can sign up for a private office, a rentable desk, or an open workstation, but renters will have access to the entire facility.

“A large conference room, a small conference room, private phone booths, you’ve got access to a high-volume printer…  You don’t need to bring anything with you. It’s fully furnished. You have every service that you could imagine,” he says.

Construction on Ampersand will start in October, and it’s expected to open in January.
