60,000 in Michigan could be eligible to sign up for health care before November

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   More than 60,000 Michiganders have likely experienced a life-changing event that qualifies them to sign up for health care through the federal health exchange before November.

The regular open enrollment period under the federal health care law begins on November 15th. But a special sign-up period is open now for people who recently got married or had kids, among other things.

Erin Knott is the Michigan state director for Enroll America – which promotes enrollment through the Affordable Care Act. She says the most common thing qualifying Michiganders for the enrollment period is moving to a new county.

“Those folks that are moving out of their existing coverage area, that’s a trigger for a life-changing circumstance,” she says.

Many low-income people are also qualified to sign up for Michigan’s expanded Medicaid program. The Healthy Michigan program does not have a limited enrollment period.
