Maps are a valuable tool for seeing history at work. Maps have been used as an aid to all types of transportation from steamboat routes to today’s single track bike trails. They are also used as a marketing tool, for reference, and entertainment. View maps of the Great Lakes and Marquette County. See how mapmakers have sometimes misled their viewers and how our landscape and surroundings have changed. You asked, we listened! This summer, from July 3rd to August 30th, we are bringing back your favorite exhibits: Remnants: Ghost Towns of the Upper Peninsula and Polar Bears: U.P. Soldiers in the Northern Russian Expeditionary Force 1918-1919.
The UP is known for its mining, creating a prosperous and booming population in its early days. But as this excitement settled, the once flourishing towns became abandoned. Now, they are forgotten, reclaimed by nature, or even demolished. Our Remnants exhibit explores 15 ghost towns, one from each county across the UP, through historic photos, contemporary photos, and drone footage.
Despite the infamy of World War 1, many don't know the history of the “Polar Bears”, a group of British, French, Canadian and U.S. troops who were sent to Northern Russia and Siberia. These units included nearly 100 UP residents who fought bravely and some even sacrificing their lives. Their stories cover the historical, social, and ethnic identities of these men through maps, artifacts, and photographs.
We are open *Monday through Saturday* 12pm to 4pm

Jul 13 Sunday
The Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will host an online public forum on Sunday, July 13 that will provide information and an opportunity to ask questions about the upcoming August 5 millage election to support construction of a new jail and county buildings.
Houghton County is considering a proposal for a new jail facility, including potentially building a new jail or renovating/adding to the property recently purchased by the county at 601 Sharon Avenue. The proposal will be presented to voters as a millage request on the August 5 ballot. The new facility would address overcrowding and safety concerns in the current jail, which has a capacity of only 28 inmates. The proposed jail would have a capacity of 70 beds and would be designed for 40 to 50 years of use.
The speaker will be Faith Morrison, co-president of the Copper Country Chapter of the League of Women Voters. Morrison, in collaboration with the Houghton County Commission, has spearheaded a public education campaign to inform voters about the new jail proposal, including tours of the existing jail. She is a professor emeritus in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University.
Forums are open to the public. They are online and run approximately one hour.
Forums are typically recorded. Find past forum recordings at https://www.keweenawuu.org/worship/sermons/
