Event Description

Superior Arts Youth Theater will be hosting intensive technical theater workshops for youth ages 11-18 interested in designing lighting, sound, or properties for their upcoming production of Kids Sing Broadway. The workshops will take place in the Black Box Theater on Northern Michigan University’s campus on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. There will be a supervised lunch break from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm during both days. Registrants are able to choose one of the following intensive workshops: Sound Lab: What sounds enhance or distract from a scene? Learn about sound design and how to run a soundboard as well as how to read a script as a designer and formulate a sound plot. Work on recording, create spooky and weird voices with sound effect software and create your own sound effects for us to use in future productions! Lighting Lab: Would you like to make lighting magic onstage? Do you know what kind of lighting you need to set the tone for a scene? Figure out these mysteries and more when you create your own designs to showcase at SAYT’s Kids Sing Broadway performances! See what goes into a lighting design and how to program the light board. Learn about color, light, shadow, patters, and why designers choose to use them. Scenic Art Lab: Learn how props, furniture and paint are incorporated into a scenic design! Find out how designers work together to create a living room, jungle, or a creepy alleyway. Learn how to dry brush, spatter, rag roll and wet blend. This workshop will teach you the basics of properties design, scenic design and paint techniques. Youth registered in a workshop will be given the opportunity to design for SAYT’s production of Kids Sing Broadway, which will run May 11 - 13. The registration cost for the intensive workshop is $50.00. Youth are able to register online at http://saytheater.org/events/technicaldesign/ This activity is supported by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. SAYT hopes to see you there!
