winter weather

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   Wildlife biologists are worried about how prolonged wintry weather will affect deer in the Upper Peninsula.

State Department of Natural Resources supervisor Terry Minzey says things looked good for the U.P. deer herd a month ago. But the situation has deteriorated as winter has held on.

Deer fitted with radio collars for DNR studies have suffered a 13.5 percent mortality rate so far this winter, with 11 percent of adult female deer dying.

Here's a list of winter weather advisories and warnings across the U.P. for Wednesday, January 7, 2015:

A wind chill warning is in effect until early Wednesday afternoon for Gogebic, Iron and Dickinson counties.

A wind chill advisory is in effect until early Wednesday afternoon for Ontonagon, Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga, Marquette, Alger, Northern Schoolcraft, Luce, Menominee, and Delta counties.

A lake effect snow warning is in effect until early Wednesday afternoon for Alger and Northern Schoolcraft counties.

After a brief respite, winter returns

YPSILANTI, MI (AP)--   Blustery winds are pushing across Michigan, knocking out traffic signals and blacking out at least 150,000 utility customers.

The National Weather Service says a cold front moving through the Great Lakes will drop temperatures in Michigan. The high reached 62 at Ypsilanti on Monday but was down to 44 by 4 p.m.

A wind advisory is in effect for much of the Lower Peninsula, with gale warnings issued on the lakes. In southern Michigan, southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are forecast that could gust to 45 mph.
