suicide

LANSING, MI--   Late Representative John Kivela told an officer during a police stop the day before he passed that his life was over.

The Detroit Free Press says the officer stopped Kivela from walking into traffic on busy US-127. The newspaper said it obtained records Thursday from the Clinton County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Lawrence Jerue says officers believed Kivela was talking about his political career when he said his life was over last week. He says there wasn't a specific suicide threat to justify keeping him in custody for a mental-health assessment.

LANSING, MI--   State Representative John Kivela has died of an apparent suicide.

The third-term Democrat was arrested Monday for a second offense of operating under the influence with a blood alcohol content of .17 or more. He had posted bond and was released from jail Tuesday morning.

Sources say when colleagues went to his Lansing home early Tuesday afternoon they found him dead.

Condolences are pouring out from the Capitol. In a press release, State Senator Tom Casperson said:

HARRIS TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Wilson man has died from injuries he sustained in a burning vehicle in Menominee County Friday.

The Hannahville Tribal Police Department says officers found the vehicle on fire near the Sweetgrass Golf Course around 12:10.  David Tovar, 45, got out of the vehicle, but had been badly burned.

Tovar was airlifted to UP Health System Marquette, then transferred to a hospital in Ann Arbor, but succumbed to his injuries.

Officials believe the case is a suicide, but police continue to investigate.

GREEN BAY, WI (AP)--   The death of a Fox Valley doctor who was missing for over three weeks has been ruled a suicide.

The Brown County Medical Examiner's Office said Tuesday it estimates Dr. Jeffrey Whiteside died June 29. That was the last day he was seen alive at his family's boat slip in Ephraim. He walked away after a disagreement with his wife. His body was found July 22 in a wooded area in Door County.

Investigators say a .22-caliber revolver found near Whiteside's body apparently belonged to him. The gun had been fired once.

MARINETTE COUNTY, WI--   Authorities have released the name of a Wisconsin man who took his own life after he shot at police while being chased last week.

The Marinette County Sheriff’s Department says the suspect is identified as Robb DeGroot, 43, of Green Bay.

BESSEMER, MI--   Authorities in the Western U.P. are investigating a suicide at the Gogebic County Jail.

State Police from the Wakefield Post say Sheriff Pete Matonich contacted them Thursday around 4 p.m.  A 53-year-old ironwood man who was lodged at the jail had apparently killed himself.

The man’s name and the cause of death have not been released.

The incident remains under investigation.
