SHERMAN TOWNSHIP, MI--   Authorities in the Keweenaw say drowning is the apparent cause of death of a 48-year-old camper from suburban Detroit whose body was pulled from Lake Superior. 

The Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office says Paul F. Lempke of Eastpointe disappeared about 11 p.m. Thursday from the Kauppi Resort and Campground in Sherman Township.

Authorities say they recovered his body Friday afternoon. They say Lempke was camping with a friend and was last seen walking along a break wall near the docks at the resort.

SHERMAN TOWNSHIP, MI--   The body of a downstate man has been recovered from Lake Superior off of Keweenaw County’s Sherman Township.  

Sheriff’s deputies say Friday around 9:30 a.m. they received a report that Paul Francis Lempke, 48, of Eastpointe was missing.  He had been camping with a friend at the Kauppi Resort and Campground on the Gay-Lac La Belle Road north of Gay.  They say Lempke had gone for a walk, and was last seen on break wall near the resort docks. 

HART, MI (AP)--   Authorities say a state trooper was fatally shot during a traffic stop in western Michigan.

Trooper Paul Butterfield stopped a vehicle in Mason County's Sherman Township at 6:20 p.m. Monday.  

Three minutes later a motorist called 911 saying a trooper had been shot in the head. Butterfield died during emergency surgery.

Sherman Township is 80 miles north of Grand Rapids.
