MOHAWK, MI--   A Baraga woman has been arrested for embezzling from her Keweenaw County workplace. 

Kelly Tapani, 34, was taken into custody Wednesday following a months-long investigation by the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office. She’s accused of embezzling between $50,000 and $100,000 from the Vansville Bar over a five-month period last year.

PHOENIX, MI--   An Illinois woman has been killed in a multiple snowmobile accident in Keweenaw County’s Allouez Township.

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened Sunday around 11:50 a.m. on Trail No. 3 about a mile south of US-41 in Phoenix.  The crash resulted in the death of Denise Hesse, 46, and injured another male driver.  He was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation. 

ALLOUEZ TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Michigan Technological University student is in serious condition after he fell while rock climbing. 

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department says Michael Gobeli, 18, of Winnetka, Illinois was with a group of people at the Cliffs in Allouez Township Sunday evening.  He had gotten to the top when he fell about 150 feet. 

MOHAWK, MI--   Law enforcement in the Calumet area will meet with the public Thursday during Coffee with a Cop.  

The program offers residents the opportunity to meet with Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post and officers from the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department to discuss community issues. 

Officials say Coffee with a Cop will let citizens share their concerns and enable police to build relationships with the public.

The event begins at 9 a.m. at Slim’s Café’ in Mohawk.

SHERMAN TOWNSHIP, MI--   Authorities in the Keweenaw say drowning is the apparent cause of death of a 48-year-old camper from suburban Detroit whose body was pulled from Lake Superior. 

The Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office says Paul F. Lempke of Eastpointe disappeared about 11 p.m. Thursday from the Kauppi Resort and Campground in Sherman Township.

Authorities say they recovered his body Friday afternoon. They say Lempke was camping with a friend and was last seen walking along a break wall near the docks at the resort.

SHERMAN TOWNSHIP, MI--   The body of a downstate man has been recovered from Lake Superior off of Keweenaw County’s Sherman Township.  

Sheriff’s deputies say Friday around 9:30 a.m. they received a report that Paul Francis Lempke, 48, of Eastpointe was missing.  He had been camping with a friend at the Kauppi Resort and Campground on the Gay-Lac La Belle Road north of Gay.  They say Lempke had gone for a walk, and was last seen on break wall near the resort docks.
