BESSEMER, MI--   Police have released the name of a Gogebic County man allegedly involved in a drive-by shooting early Sunday morning.

The Sheriff’s Office was called around 1:55 a.m. to the Keystone Bar in Ramsay on a report that shots were fired. Cory Leuzzo, 29, of Ramsay was arrested Sunday afternoon. He’s accused of firing multiple rounds from his vehicle with an assault rifle after a disagreement with a female acquaintance. No injuries were reported.

BESSEMER, MI--   The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of an unresponsive woman Monday in Bessemer.  

Deputies responded to a 911 call from the 1600 block of South Hadley Street around 1:20 p.m. They found an unresponsive 31-year-old woman at the residence.

Officials haven’t released the condition of the woman or her identity.

The incident remains under investigation. 

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI--   Gogebic County officials are investigating the death of a Wisconsin woman.

Wednesday around 7:25 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched in an attempt to locate a 65-year-old 

Woodruff resident. Information received from Wisconsin authorities led the Sheriff’s Office to start searching the areas of Copper Peak and Black River Harbor in Ironwood Township.

Around 8 a.m. located the missing woman’s vehicle in the parking lot at Black River Harbor. They requested the assistance of the Gogebic County Search and Rescue Team.

GOGEBIC COUNTY, MI--   An angler reported missing in Gogebic County has been found. 

Tuesday around 5:20 p.m. the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a 52-year-old Presque Isle, Wisconsin man lost while fishing in the Ottawa National Forest. Within an hour of deputies arriving at the scene the man was located south of Forest Service Road 8100 with no injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Gogebic County Search and Rescue Team. 

WAKEFIELD, MI--   Two Gogebic County men are jailed on animal cruelty charges.

Sheriff’s officials say the arrest of Gerald Herlache, 51, and Lawrence Murphy, 52, was the result of an investigation into a residence in the city of Wakefield. Nineteen animals were seized after deputies executed a search warrant late last week.

Both suspects are charged with two counts of felony cruelty to 10 or more animals. Both remain lodged in the Gogebic County Jail on 10 percent of a $20,000 bond.

BESSEMER TOWNSHIP, MI--   The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash in Bessemer Township over the weekend.

Deputies say Donald Houghton, 63, of Lake Villa, Illinois was driving on Chaney Lake Road when his vehicle left the roadway and struck several trees.

The accident was found by a passing motorist early Saturday morning, but officials believe it happened sometime Friday night.

Michigan State Police, the Wakefield Fire Department, and the Bessemer Township Fire Department assisted at the scene. 

BESSEMER, MI--    The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department is searching for a man who escaped from jail Monday night.

Officers noticed Daniel Ferguson, 26, was missing around 8:50 p.m. He’s a 6-foot-tall, 180-pound white male with hazel eyes and blond hair. Ferguson has tattoos on his neck, chest, upper arms, and left hand.

Deputies say Ferguson was last seen wearing black and white-striped pants and an orange T-shirt. He was barefoot, headed north on Moore Street in the City of Bessemer.

BESSEMER, MI--   The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office wants people to be aware of the latest scam involving VISA that’s making its way through the Midwest.

Officials say the caller already has your credit card number, and they’re trying to get one more piece of information in order to use it. They’ll identify themselves as being with the Security and Fraud Department at VISA, then ask if you made a purchase just under $500 from a certain company. The victim says no, and the caller says they’ll issue a credit for the purchase and a fraud investigation will be launched.

BESSEMER, MI--   Police have released the name of an Ironwood Township man who had a standoff with police Tuesday.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office was called to Vanderhagen Road around 2 p.m. on a report that a man had shot a pellet gun at his neighbor’s house. When deputies confronted Leonard Hellier, 47, he threatened them while holding a machete. Officers tazed him, but Hellier got back into his house and barricaded himself inside with weapons.
