CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI--   The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office says hazardous winter weather caused numerous accidents Thursday.

In Raco, a semi had slowed down for other traffic on M-28 when it was rear-ended by a pickup truck. The driver and passenger of the pickup were injured and taken to War Memorial Hospital for treatment.

At virtually the same time a snowmobile accident on Trail #8 killed a downstate man.

PICKFORD TOWNSHIP, MI--   A 52-year-old man has been killed in a car crash in Chippewa County.

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened Friday around 11:30 p.m. on Pea Line Road in Pickford Township. They say a vehicle driven by Robert Roy left the roadway and hit a parked horse trailer.

Roy was taken to War Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

Officials believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Michigan State Police, the Kinross Police Department, and the U.S. Border Patrol assisted at the scene. 

KINCHELOE, MI--   A Kincheloe man has been arrested for sexually assaulting a minor. 

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint last Wednesday and executed a search warrant at a residence Thursday. They arrested William Mastaw, 19, who was arraigned on three counts each of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, producing child sexually abusive material, using a computer in commission of a felony, possession of child sexually abusive material, and accosting a minor for immoral purposes.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   A driver in Chippewa County is lucky to be alive, after he became trapped in his partially submerged vehicle over the weekend. 

Saturday around 11:30 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies and State Police responded to a report of a vehicle entering the St. Marys River at the end of 9 Mile Road. Several people in a boat found a vehicle partially submerged in the river with a man still stuck inside. Officers learned that the 73-year-old driver had driven into the water several hours earlier, but couldn’t get out of the car.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   A Brimley man has been arrested for kidnapping and sexual assault.

Saturday around 8 p.m. the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office was called to a residence on Lakeshore Drive. Deputies were asked to back up Bay Mills Police for a disturbance call. Investigation indicated that an assault happened off the Bay Mills Reservation.

Officers say they discovered that several different sexual assaults had occurred within a two-day period. The suspect had allegedly driven the victim deep into the woods on a couple of occasions and attacked her.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--    Police have identified a Sugar Island man who was stabbed by a 12-year-old boy for assaulting the boy’s mother. 

Edgardo Acevedo-Silva, 33, is charged with domestic violence, assault with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm in a building, and felony firearms. He’s accused of firing multiple rounds into the floor of a residence on Labor Day. Fearing for his mother’s life, a boy stabbed Silva four times. He and his mother ran from the house and Silva chased them with the gun.

SUGAR ISLAND, MI--   Chippewa County Sheriff’s deputies have a man in custody, following an incident of domestic violence that included the discharge of a firearm and a stabbing.

It happened Monday at midnight at a residence on Lake George Road on Sugar Island. Police say during a domestic assault the suspect fired multiple rounds into the floor. A 12-year-old boy, fearing for his mother’s life, stabbed the suspect in the back four times.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Two Kincheloe men have been arrested for raping a Dafter woman.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office says last Friday afternoon the victim was home alone with a young child when two men entered the house.  The men chased her into a bedroom and took turns assaulting her while the other man held the door shut. 

Officials believe the suspects knew the victim and also knew she was basically alone at the time.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   A De Tour woman has been arrested in connection with a fatal Chippewa County traffic accident in December.  

The County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash on east M-48 near East Townline Road on December 2.  A pickup had rolled over onto its top, trapping Benjamin Hilts, 35, of De Tour inside.  Fire personnel had to cut Hilts out of the truck.  He ultimately died of his injuries. 

RABAR TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Detour man has been killed in a single-vehicle accident in Chippewa County. 

The county Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened Saturday on M-48 near Townline Road in Rabar Township.  Deputies arrived on the scene around 11 p.m. and found a pickup truck in the ditch. 

The driver—identified as 35-year-old Benjamin Hilts of Detour—was apparently southbound on M-48 when the truck left the road, went into the ditch, and hit a large rock and several trees before coming to rest on its side.  Hilts was pronounced dead at the scene.
