Brits and Brews: Music of the 1960s British Invasion, a benefit for JJ Packs, is happening at the Ore Dock Brewing Company. Hans Ahlstrom spoke with organizer Dave Stensaas about the event, the bands, and JJ Packs.

Northern Lights A Capella Facebook Page

The Northern Lights A Capella Choir has been around since 2010 - they are the only collegiate a capella choir on Northern Michigan University's campus.  They have a concert coming up Tuesday April 24th on the campus of NMU, to showcase what they've been working this semester.  Kurt Hauswirth spoke with the group's musical director, Anna Morrison, about what the audience can expect at the concert.


Mr. Mas-Arocas currently serves as the Music Director and Conductor of the Mansfield Symphony in Ohio, as well as Director of Orchestras at Ithaca College, New York. Previously, he has served as the Director of Orchestral Studies and Associate Professor of Conducting at the Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of music, Director of Orchestral Studies at Lawrence University, and principal conductor of the Green Bay Symphony.

Kurt Hauswirth had an opportunity to speak with Petri Prauda, one of the members of the Nordgrass group, Frigg, about their members, their beginnings as a group, their cultural inspirations and what they recall about their previous trip to the Upper Peninsula in 2002.

Marquette Symphony Orchestra

The last performance of the season for the Marquette Symphony Orchestra will be led by guest conductor Octavio Mas-Arocas, in a concert titled, "Fantastic Tales, Sumptuous Melodies."  It will feature works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Kodaly and Tchaikovsky.  Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Octavio about the concert and why the pieces chosen are so important to him.

The concert takes place Saturday, Apr 21 at 7:30pm ET.  Tickets are available at any NMU EZ Ticket outlet, and also at the door.


Northern Michigan University's Forest Roberts Theater's performances of Disney's Tarzan will include a sensory friendly Sunday matinee. Public Radio 90 intern Brady Skewis spoke with Bill Digneit, Director of the Forest Roberts Theater, about the importance of such a performance and the response from the students involved to the community at large.

The special sensory friendly performance of Tarzan is Sunday, April 15 at 2pm.

Jazz pianist and singer Aimee Nolte is the featured artist at the 2018 NMU Jazz Festival. Over the course of only a couple of days, the featured artist works with the NMU Jazz Lab band on original tunes and jazz standards in preparation for the festival's closing concert Friday night. Nolte and Dr Mark Flaherty, the director of NMU's Jazz Studies, stopped by Public Radio 90 to talk about the festival, working with the students of the jazz lab band, and her love of jazz.

Nolte is also conducting clinics at 11am and 4pm in Jamrich 1100.

Marquette Choral Society

The Marquette Choral Society will perform a newly commissioned work by local composer, Griffin Candey, with texts by Walt Whitman, Anastasia Pennington-Flax and local area poet, Kathleen M. Heideman.  THE NIGHT PSALMS will premiere alongside Ralph Vaughan Williams epic major work DONA NOBIS PACEM, also on texts by Walt Whitman.  

Upper Yoopers Barbershop Chorus

Kurt Hauswirth spoke with the musical director of da Upper Yoopers' Barbershop Chorus, Pete Stephens-Brown, about the upcoming Spring Fling Sing '18, the 3rd annual barbershop chorus singing event to benefit the Gwinn Middle and High School Choral Programs.

Hans Ahlstrom sat down with the Poet Laureate of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Martin Achatz, and discussed an upcoming reading of Bigfoot poems at Northern Michigan University.

The reading takes place Tuesday April 10th 3pm ET at the Harden Learning Resources Center on the campus of Northern Michigan University.  We have word that perhaps Bigfoot may make an appearance.
