Workers picket hospital's use of outside labor

MARQUETTE, MI--   Members of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades and others protested Duke LifePoint’s use of non-local workers on its new hospital in Marquette Monday.

WLUC-TV reports more than 50 people picketed in front of Skanska Construction. They said hospital officials had committed to using only local labor, then brought in window installers from Florida. Union reps say money that could have stayed local is instead going elsewhere.

Marquette County Commissioner Joe Derocha said the hospital was given tax abatements and should have hired local first.

The picket did not stop work at the hospital.
