Woman taken for mental health evaluation following Houghton airport incident

HOUGHTON, MI--   A 25-year-old woman is hospitalized after she caused a disturbance at the Houghton County Airport.

Tuesday around 11:40 p.m. troopers from the Calumet Post were notified that the Houghton resident had entered the airport and tried to access a computer behind the counter. She told airport personnel she needed help and wanted police to arrest her, then said she had a gun and left the terminal.

State Police and deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office responded and found the woman in her car by the Keweenaw Research Center. They determined she didn’t have a gun.

The woman was taken to UPHS-Portage for a mental health evaluation, then transferred to UPHS-Marquette for further treatment.

A scheduled flight landed at the airport when the incident occurred. Passengers were kept on the plane until the woman was in custody.

No charges are being sought and no names will be released.
