U.P. woman honored with Munising Post Office dedication

MUNISING, MI--   Congressman Dan Benishek has rededicated the Munising Post Office to a woman who was an integral part of the community in the early 20th century.

Elizabeth L. Kinnunen moved to the area from Finland in 1903 and married her husband Oscar in 1909.  They operated a boarding house for miners in Marquette before they moved to Munising.

Kinnunen had 11 children.  Three of them served in the military and two died in war.

During a ceremony Thursday the Munising Post Office became the Elizabeth L. Kinnunen Post Office.  Benishek introduced the bill that led to the rededication.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
