WI dealing with phone scam

MADISON, WI (AP)--   Wisconsin consumer protection officials are warning people to be on the lookout for a government imposter phone scam.

The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says residents around the state have been getting pre-recorded calls from a Steven Martin from the U.S. Treasury. The recording warns that the treasury has launched an enforcement action against the person who answers. The recording provides a number he or she should call to avoid appearing before a judge or grand jury for a federal criminal offense.

DATCP officials say anyone who receives the call should hang up and not call the number the recording provides. They say scammers often pretend to be government officials and threaten people with arrest or financial penalties for various fictional offenses.
