Whiteout conditions cause crash on Mackinac Bridge

UPDATE, 2:25 p.m.:  The Mackinac Bridge has been reopened to traffic.

ST. IGNACE, MI (AP)--   Blowing snow and a multi-vehicle crash have led officials to close the Mackinac Bridge.

Mackinac Bridge Authority Executive Secretary Bob Sweeney says the crash happened around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday on the causeway near the toll booths on the bridge's north side.

He says it appears about eight cars were involved. There was no immediate word of injuries.

Sweeney says winds gusting up to 50 mph were blowing snow off the frozen Straits of Mackinac, making visibility poor.

He says the bridge probably will be closed until early Tuesday afternoon. The wreckage must be cleared and the road plowed.

Sweeney says officers are re-routing traffic and hundreds of vehicles are waiting to cross the nearly five-mile-long bridge.
