Water levels being adjusted at UPPCO reservoirs

MARQUETTE, MI--   Upper Peninsula Power Company is lowering water levels at its hydroelectric reservoirs.

Officials say it’s in anticipation of melting snow and precipitation in the coming spring. Water levels at UPPCO’s Silver Lake and Hoist reservoirs are currently being lowered according to federal rules. The Victoria Dam, Bond Falls, and Lake Gogebic reservoirs will be lowered sometime this month. Prickett Dam reservoir levels will be lowered starting in February.

UPPCO is reminding the public that water level changes can result in unsafe ice conditions due to “bridging,” or the creation of an air gap beneath the ice. Increased water flowing through the rivers may also cause the ice to deteriorate, creating unsafe conditions on the surface.
