Wanted man arrested for assault in Forsyth Township

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, MI--   The Forsyth Township Police Department has apprehended a Marquette man wanted by law enforcement for more than a year.

Nickolas Birney, 37, was an absconder from circuit court probation and was wanted on a probation violation since November.

Forsyth Police say on Wednesday they were dispatched to the area of County Road 553 and M-35 for an assault complaint. Investigation revealed Birney had shown up at the residence, caused a disturbance, and was asked to leave. He allegedly produced a BB gun from a backpack and pointed it at the victim, who took it away.

The Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office has authorized a felonious assault warrant for Birney.

Officers say they received an anonymous tip regarding Birney’s whereabouts. They were then able to conduct a traffic stop and arrest him.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
