Voting open for Poet Laureate of the U.P.

MARQUETTE, MI--   Time is running out to vote for your favorite candidate to become Poet Laureate of the U.P.

Out of 17 nominations this year, six finalists remain:  Martin Achatz, Sally Brunk, Kathleen Heideman, Kathleen Carlton Johnson, Beverly Matherne, and Saara Myrene Raappana.  The one who receives the most votes will become a cheerleader for poetry in the U.P. for the next two years.

Ron Reikki created the position.  He says it’s up to the winner to decide what they’d like to do during their tenure.

“Like for Russell Thorburn, the very first year I did it, I was kind of curious what he did and I was really happy that he brought poetry to the schools. It’s wide open to the imaginations and especially the passions of what the poet laureate wants to do,” he says.

To vote, go to the Great Lakes Commonwealth of Letters website at www.readwritelive.org and click “submit”.

Voting is open until December 31, 2016.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
