Volunteers signing up to help Lake Superior

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Superior Watershed Partnership is giving people the opportunity to restore Lake Superior.

The SWP is offering ten volunteer projects every Friday through the summer for those who want to help conserve the area. It's called the Lake Superior Volunteer Corps.

Emily Goodman is a Great Lakes Conservation Corps coordinator. She’s heard reports from Pictured Rocks, the Porcupine Mountains and other areas that tourism has gone up around 300 percent in the last couple of years. She says because of that, the SWP wanted to come up with a program that helps combat erosion, litter, and degradation of coastal habitat.

Goodman says volunteers can participate in a variety of projects.

“We’re going to do some dune restoration, native wildlife and habitat restoration—that includes planting or invasive species removal—wetland restoration, some climate adaptation projects, (and) small green infrastructure projects,” she says.

Goodman says the SWP will provide tools and training.
