UPSET bust in Luce County nabs downstate woman

NEWBERRY, MI--   A Grand Rapids-area woman has been arrested for bringing drugs into Luce County.

The Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team conducted an investigation into the distribution of cocaine, marijuana, and prescription pills in the county.  They identified a suspect who was transporting the narcotics to the area, and believed she was going to give the drugs to an inmate in the Newberry Correctional Facility.

On July 9 detectives located the suspect, Meagan Leann Cruz, 32, in her vehicle on Borgstrom Road in Newberry.  Troopers from the Michigan State Police 8th District Hometown Security Team stopped her and searched the vehicle, uncovering marijuana, cocaine, and nearly 200 prescription pills.

Cruz is lodged in the Luce County Jail on charges of delivery of controlled substance, delivery of marijuana, and two counts of possession of cocaine.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
