HOUGHTON, MI (AP)-- A Marquette woman is promoting her craft as Upper Peninsula poet laureate.
The Daily Mining Gazette reports that Andrea Scarpino recently visited students at Michigan Technological University. She did a reading and met with English and psychology classes.
She says she's always been interested in poetry but it was not until college creative writing classes that she got serious about it. She has since put out a collection of her poetry and last spring was named to a two-year term as poet laureate.
The position was created in 2013. Russell Thorburn was the first poet laureate. A literary nonprofit group, nominated Scarpino and four others to be his successor. More than 15,000 people voted in the subsequent election.
Scarpino has a second poetry book on the way.
