UPDATE: One person dead in Marquette County crash

UPDATE, 5:35 pm:  The Marquette County Sheriff's Department has identified the driver of the vehicle as William King, 63, of Republic. It's believed that King recently moved to the area from Wisconsin. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger was Brian Yelle, 53, of Republic. He was taken to UPHS Marquette, treated, and released.

Officials believe alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI--   One person has been killed in a single-vehicle crash between North and South Republic in Marquette County. 

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened Thursday around 5:35 p.m. on County Road 601 at Hawks Drive. Preliminary investigation indicates a 1980s Mercedes containing two males was southbound when the driver lost control. The vehicle rolled down an embankment and landed upside-down in a pond.

One of the males was reported dead at the scene. The second subject was taken to UPHS Marquette. A dog inside the vehicle was taken to UPAWS.

The victims’ names are being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.

The accident remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
