Two announce candidacy for Marquette sheriff

MARQUETTE, MI--   Two people have thrown their hats into the ring and declared themselves candidates for Marquette County Sheriff.

Undersheriff Mike Klein announced Thursday his intention to run on the Democratic ticket.  He says if elected, he’ll focus on the county’s meth problem, the “dark store” property tax issue, and increased road patrols.

Also running is Lowell Larson, a 16-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office and currently a supervisor in the road patrol division.  Larson says he wants to use technology to increase efficiency and interoperability in the criminal justice system, make the road patrol a 24/7 operation that services all areas of the county, and either build a new jail facility or renovate the current one.

Larson is also running as a democrat.

Sheriff Mike Lovelace held a press conference Monday morning to announce his endorsement of Klein to replace him.

The election will be held in November of next year.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
