Trooper shoots suspect in Eastern U.P. incident

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI--   A Michigan State Police trooper was injured and a suspect shot, following a domestic disturbance in Chippewa County.

Two troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post and a deputy from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office responded Monday around 6:30 p.m. to a residence in Hulbert.  When officers attempted to contact a 37-year-old male subject he fled in a vehicle, then rammed into the troopers’ patrol cars when they tried to stop him.  Both vehicles were disabled and one of the troopers was injured.  The suspect then got out of his vehicle and continued an attempt to harm the officers.  He was shot by one of the troopers.

The injured trooper was treated at a nearby hospital and released.  The suspect was airlifted to UPHS Marquette.  His condition is unknown.

Michigan State Police officials are conducting an investigation into the incident.  Once it’s complete a report will be forwarded to the Chippewa County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

The trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, in accordance with department policy.
