Tribal Police supplied with anti-overdose drug

BARAGA, MI--   Officers with the Keweenaw Bay Tribal Police Department now have Narcan at their disposal.

The drug displaces opioids from receptors in the brain and can immediately reverse the effects of an overdose.

All patrol officers have been issued Narcan. They’ve been trained to recognize the signs of opioid overdose and how to administer the drug to someone experiencing an overdose. Officials say it’s administered nasally, so officers don’t have to use a needle.

The KBTPD says it received the Narcan supplies through a Michigan State Police grant and training from Bay Ambulance EMT personnel.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
