Trial cannot proceed for man accused of Houghton killing

HOUGHTON, MI--   A Houghton man charged with killing an elderly woman at Douglass House Apartments last September has again been found incompetent to stand trial.

On Friday Timothy Cadeau, 30, appeared in 97th District Court by video from Ypsilanti’s Center for Forensic Psychiatry.  He’s been receiving treatment there since last October.

Dadeau is charged with homicide and first-degree home invasion in connection with the death of 84-year-old Geraldine Fouts.  Last year he was deemed unfit to stand trial and sent downstate for up to 15 months of treatment.

On Friday Judge Mark Wisti said while Cadeau was still unfit, continued treatment and hospitalization may restore him to competency.

He faces up to life in prison.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
