IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   Divers have recovered the body of a Norway teen who drowned in the Menominee River trying to help another swimmer.

The Iron Mountain Daily News says Bryan Stanchina, 17, was swimming with several others in the Twin Falls area of the river Tuesday afternoon when one of them began struggling in the heavy current.

Recent heavy rains had triggered a flood advisory earlier in the week.

Several of the teens entered the water to help the swimmer, who eventually made it to shore. Stanchina, however, was swept away from the Upper Twin Falls Bridge by the strong current and was last seen by the Wisconsin shore.

Authorities searched for seven hours before recovering Stanchina’s body around 8:40 p.m. in 14 feet of water on the Wisconsin side of the river near a private access road to the Twin Falls Power Dam.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
