Tech student from Illinois injured in fall

ALLOUEZ TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Michigan Technological University student is in serious condition after he fell while rock climbing.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department says Michael Gobeli, 18, of Winnetka, Illinois was with a group of people at the Cliffs in Allouez Township Sunday evening.  He had gotten to the top when he fell about 150 feet.

Emergency personnel strapped Gobeli to a backboard, placed him in a basket, then rappelled him down the cliff.  He was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, then transferred to Marquette General Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
