Teachers, administration reach tentative contract in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI--   Marquette Area Public Schools teachers have reached a tentative agreement on a contract with district administration.

Marquette Area Education Association President Erin LaValley says the two sides reached a mutual understanding during negotiations that started at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

LaValley says she cannot reveal details of the agreement until the entire teachers' union reviews and approves it.

The school board will also need to ratify the agreement.  It can only do so during a public hearing, the next of which is scheduled for September 8.

Teachers were heading into a second year without a contract.  The lack of progress during negotiations created dissension and discord between the two sides.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
