Suspect drives into Menominee River

KINGSFORD, MI--   A man fleeing police drove his car into the Menominee River early Wednesday morning. 

WLUC-TV reports Kingsford Public Safety tried to stop a man on a traffic violation around 1:30 a.m., but he sped off.  Officers pursued the suspect through the city, but the subject drove into Aurora, Wisconsin.  Police continued to pursue the vehicle, which entered the Aurora boat landing and drove into the Menominee River.  The suspect got out of the vehicle through its sunroof. 

The Florence County Sheriff’s Department took the driver into custody.  Dickinson County is reviewing the case for charges. 

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Iron Mountain Police, Michigan State Police, Niagara Police Department, and Aurora Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
