Sugar Island boy stabs man assaulting his mother

SUGAR ISLAND, MI--   Chippewa County Sheriff’s deputies have a man in custody, following an incident of domestic violence that included the discharge of a firearm and a stabbing.

It happened Monday at midnight at a residence on Lake George Road on Sugar Island. Police say during a domestic assault the suspect fired multiple rounds into the floor. A 12-year-old boy, fearing for his mother’s life, stabbed the suspect in the back four times.

The mother and child ran out the back door to escape the suspect, who also ran out of the house to look for the boy. Evidence at the scene suggests he fired several times in their direction as they ran toward the St. Marys River.

The victim and her son were located by responding officers. The Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team was called in, and after several hours found and arrested the suspect for felonious assault, aggravated domestic assault, reckless discharge of a firearm, and felony firearms. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his stab wounds, but remains in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office.

The case remains under investigation.
