Michigan State Police from the Negaunee post is warning residents of a new phone scam affecting Marquette County residents. Troopers say the callers identify themselves as members of the Michigan State Police and ask for money. As of yesterday (Wednesday) morning, at least three residents had reported calls from scammers.
State Police are reminding residents that law enforcement never calls and asks for money or bank account information. residents are advised to never give out personal information to unknown callers and to never respond to unsolicited emails from unknown senders.
Confirm the identity of a contact by speaking with the identified source, like your bank, credit card company, or government agency… or ask for a call-back name and number and use a reliable source to confirm the phone number or email.
Finally, residents are asked to report any suspicious contacts to police.
