IRON RIVER, MI (AP)-- A 68-foot tall spruce in Iron River will be Michigan's state Christmas tree.
The tree was chosen this week. It will be cut down November 6 and hauled to Lansing, where it will be displayed on the Capitol grounds throughout the holiday season.
The Daily News of Iron Mountain says the tree is in the yard of Jonny Waara's home. He says he's unsure how old it is.
Denny Olson of the Michigan Association of Timbermen spotted the tree and advised Waara to nominate it. Waara says his family is excited that it was chosen.
To be considered, trees must be a spruce or fir, be at least 65 feet tall and have a maximum crown diameter of 30 feet with a maximum trunk diameter of 30 inches.
