St. Mary's ice breaking begins

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (AP)--   The U.S. Coast Guard is beginning to prepare for the upcoming shipping season with ice breaking operations in the St. Marys River.

The work is scheduled to begin Friday in the lower part of the river near DeTour and will extend north to the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie. The Evening News reports the U.S. Coast Guard Cutters Mackinaw, Biscayne Bay, Mobile Bay and Katmai Bay will conduct the ice breaking work.

Portions of the Middle and West Neebish channels will be broken out. But the ice bridge above the ferry landing to Neebish Island will not be impacted.

The entire West Neebish Channel will be opened shortly before the March 25 opening of the Soo Locks.
