Spoofing scam pops up in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Marquette Police Department says residents need to be aware of a “spoofing” scam in the area.

The scammer will contact a person and pose as a police officer, then try to extract financial or Social Security information from the victim. The number that shows on caller ID may possibly be from a police department.

Marquette Police say spoofing happens when a scammer uses a computer program to change or hide their real number.

Officers say they will never ask for such information over the phone. They advise residents to verify the police agency number and contact them directly for inquiries. Do not rely on caller ID information for verification about who’s calling.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
