Soo officers hurt in chase

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (AP)--   Sault Ste. Marie police say two officers were injured when they fell while chasing two teenage theft suspects on foot.

The Soo Evening News says one officer sustained a severe skull fracture and was flown to Marquette General Hospital for surgery.

Police say the chase happened about 4 a.m. Thursday and say they've identified a 15 year-old Sault Ste. Marie boy and a 17-year-old Wisconsin girl as suspects.

Police say Officer Chris Stempsky slid down an embankment in the dark and struck his head on a bounder, fracturing his skull near his right eye. They say Officer Nate Kaczmarek hurt his foot in a 7-foot fall.

Police say the case involved larceny from a vehicle and property destruction.

Officials say Stempsky is recovering at home, while Kaczmarek is returning to work.
