SAULT STE. MARIE, MI-- The MacArthur Lock in Sault Ste. Marie has reopened, 20 days after it was shut down for repairs.
The Army Corps of Engineers says the lock went back into service Monday. It was shut down and dewatered July 29 after it wouldn’t shut properly. Ships were redirected to the Poe Lock. The original estimate for the outage was ten days, but it ended up taking twice as long.
As of Monday, the Corps calculated 103 ships were delayed a total of 166 hours because of the closure. Many officials, including Governor Rick Snyder, are calling for the construction of a new lock to handle some of the traffic.
