Snyder vetoes bill that would reduce some harbor permit fees

upnorthlive.com

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Governor Rick Snyder has vetoed a bill that would have cut certain permit fees for noncommercial residential harbors but would lead to a $166,000 annual loss for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

Snyder's office says the governor vetoed the bill Monday because the loss in funding might hurt the DEQ's ability to process permits.

The bill would have reduced permit fees for private boat harbors to $10 annually. Under the bill, the fees would be waived if harbor owners let members of the public dock boats during storms.

Snyder says in his veto letter that he supports the intent of the legislation -- to make sure permit fees are reasonable. Snyder says he looks forward to working with the DEQ and Republican Senator Tom Casperson on the issue.
