LANSING, MI (AP)-- Michigan Governor Rick Snyder is preparing to sign a $54.5 billion state budget with modest spending increases on education and road construction.
The plan being approved on Wednesday afternoon in Lansing also includes new initiatives designed to boost early literacy and training for skilled trades jobs. The budget spends about 3 percent more than in the current year.
The increase is partly due to higher-than-expected enrollment in Michigan's federally funded Medicaid expansion program. Programs being cut include financial incentives for the production of movies and TV shows. The budget also closes a juvenile justice facility and eliminates human services positions.
The spending plan takes effect in October.
Snyder and the Republican-led Legislature will continue talks over the summer on permanently boosting funding for road and bridge infrastructure by $1.2 billion.
