Senate candidates sling accusations in ACA/shutdown situation

LANSING, MI (AP)--   U.S. Representative Gary Peters of Michigan says he'll donate his salary to charity for the duration of any government shutdown.

The Democratic U.S. Senate candidate made the announcement Wednesday.

Congress is considering a spending bill to avoid an October 1 shutdown, but House Republicans say it shouldn't include funding for the federal health care law.

Peters, of Bloomfield Township, says when Michigan families miss work, "they don't get paid" and the same should hold for Congress.

A spokeswoman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee says Peters thinks it's more important to fund "Obamacare" than to keep the government running.

Terri Lynn Land

Michigan's lone Republican Senate candidate, Terri Lynn Land, has pledged to oppose any funding to implement the health law. That has led Democrats to accuse her of supporting a government shutdown.
