Schools with too many snow days helped by bill
ASSOCIATED PRESS - The Michigan Senate has approved a bill letting schools with too many snow days avoid having to schedule makeup days in June.
Schools instead could lengthen their days for the rest of the school year under legislation approved 34-1 on Thursday. The bill could win final passage in the House next week.
Supporters say the measure is needed because some districts in northern Michigan had more than the maximum six snow days, some as recently as April. They say families have already scheduled vacations and camps for kids after school ends.
Some schools are facing the prospect of extending the school year at least one more week if the legislation is not signed into law. Under the bill, schools would still have to meet the minimum 1,098 hours of instruction.
