School infrastructure improvements to come through investment bill

LANSING, MI--   Two Upper Peninsula colleges and one university will benefit from a bill signed by Governor Snyder Monday that will invest in infrastructure projects.  The measure commits $304 million to fund 18 projects across Michigan.

Bay de Noc Community College will get $750,000 to remodel the nursing lab/lecture hall.  Gogebic Community College is also getting $750,000 for building renovations.  And $25 million is slated for Northern Michigan University to replace Jamrich Hall.

NMU wants to raze Jamrich and Gries halls and construct a more modern and technologically up-to-date building.  Officials say the new energy-efficient building could save the university around $180,000 a year in operating costs.  They say it would also make better use of space by containing Jamrich’s classrooms and Gries Hall’s faculty offices.

The new building will eventually be joined to the Learning Resources Center.
