Scam phone calls continue

MARQUETTE, MI--   Michigan State Police say they just keep on happening.

Scammers are making fraudulent phone calls in hopes of conning people out of money. Troopers say the callers usually give the victim a sense of urgency, pretending to be an official of a legitimate organization. Some even threaten to have the victim arrested if they don’t give the scammer money immediately.

One reoccurring scam involves the caller posing as an IRS agent, claiming the victim owes unpaid taxes. The scammer often calls a second time, posing as a police officer and threatening arrest if money isn’t sent.

Troopers say the IRS never requests money over the phone, so anyone who gets such a call should just hang up. They also remind residents never to give out their social security number or bank account numbers.
