SAULT STE. MARIE, MI-- Some work to improve the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge is being rescheduled as part of an effort to use new technology and cut costs.
The bridge authority's board met this week and received updates on maintenance at the bridge connecting Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Painting of the bridge's Canadian arch was scheduled for 2016, but officials say they're looking at new coatings. They say a test of a new coating system will be completed this year, so the arch project is pushed back at least until 2017.
International Bridge Administration general manager Peter Petainen says in a statement they're reviewing the bridge's overall business plan related to the timing of future capital projects as officials prepare for more intensive preventive maintenance.
