Sands Township accident claims life

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person was killed in a two-vehicle accident on M-553 in Sands Township Tuesday morning.

Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post were dispatched around 7:55 to the scene just south of Olsen Road. They say a Mercury Montego driven by Marcus Trujillo, 18, of downstate Fennville was southbound when he lost control of the vehicle and went into the oncoming lane. The car hit a northbound Chrysler Town and Country driven by Peter Anderson, 41, of Gwinn.

A front seat passenger in the Trujillo vehicle, Benjamin Johnson, 18, of Norway, was pronounced dead at the scene. All other occupants of both vehicles were taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

The accident remains under investigation.

Troopers were assisted by Forsyth Township Fire/EMS, Sands Township Fire/EMS, Marquette County Rescue Unit 131, and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
