Saatio flees again

COSTA RICA--   A Houghton fugitive has apparently escaped from a Costa Rican detention center.

WLUC-TV says John Saatio, 34, was arrested in the Central American country June 2 after Interpol flagged him for escaping U.S. custody in June of 2015.  He fled from deputies following a hearing at the Houghton County Courthouse and was later seen in Green Bay.

Saatio is charged with home invasion, destruction of police property, and a probation violation.  He’s also a registered sex offender.

An immigration spokeswoman says while awaiting deportation to Michigan Saatio had applied for refugee status in Costa Rica, which lengthened his stay at the detention center.  She says immigration police and Costa Rican police are trying to track him down.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
