Saario faces up to life in prison at September sentencing

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   A September sentencing date has been set for an Iron County man found guilty of murder.

Alfred Saario, 66, of Alpha was charged with homicide-open murder and discharging a firearm indoors resulting in death in the June 2016 killing of Jamie Lee James, 29. Saario and his stepdaughter allegedly fought over a cell phone before the shooting happened.

Saario was convicted by a jury of second-degree murder and the firearm charge Friday following a week-long trial. The jury deliberated for three hours before returning the guilty verdict.

Sentencing is set for September 21 in Iron County Circuit Court. Saario faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
