Marquette, MI – Marquette County's retire-rehire program has met IRS and Municipal Employees Retirement System requirements. The program allows county employees to retire, then be rehired to the same position, while collecting a pension and regular paycheck.
Opponents of the plan say it constitutes double-dipping, but supporters say it saves the county money in retirement and health insurance costs and allows them to keep valuable talent.
The Mining Journal says MERS' Chief General Counsel affirmed the county may continue the program. The MERS board next meets in November and could reevaluate the plan at that time.
