Reinhardt to be first Students' Choice speaker at NMU commencement

MARQUETTE, MI--   For the very first time, Northern Michigan University’s mid-year graduation ceremony will feature a faculty or staff member chosen by students to be the keynote speaker.

The recipient of the inaugural Students’ Choice Award is Martin Reinhardt, a professor in the Center for Native American Studies.  His selection precedes next week’s 20th anniversary of the center, which created the only bachelor’s degree in Native American Studies in Michigan.  The program’s first graduates will walk across the stage Saturday.

Reinhardt is an Anishinaabe Ojibway from the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.  His presentation will include an Eagle Honor Song sung by the Morning Thunder drum group

NMU’s commencement begins Saturday at 10:30 a.m.  It will be broadcast live on Public TV 13 and streamed online at nmu.edu/commencement.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
